Scars are Beautiful
The ‘Scars are beautiful’ campaign is an initiative directed towards raising awareness about congenital heart surgery in children in association with the NGO ‘Mending tiny hearts'... which is run by a group of surgeons, cardiologists, and healthcare professionals who are trying to bridge the gap that exists in the field of cardiac healthcare in India.
Congenital heart disease has an incidence of 1 in every 100 children born. They can range from a simple hole in the heart to complex connection issues. Most of the conditions require open heart surgery and when treated appropriately at the right time, have excellent outcomes, such that these children have a better quality of life.
The presence of a scar on the chest, because of heart surgery conveys that the child has gone through complex heart surgery and has been a fighter – “A Heart warrior” essentially.
This photo campaign is to promote awareness about child heart surgery and to showcase the scar as a sign of victory over heart disease, for this, we highlighted these scars with golden foil taking inspiration from ‘Kintsugi’ the Japanese art which treats breakage and repair as a part of the history of an object rather than something to disguise.
We believe that this campaign will help more people understand about heart surgery in children, and for those worried about treating their child, it gives a sense of hope seeing these happy children showcasing their scar and therefore believe that ‘Scars are beautiful’.
