BREAST MILK DONATION AWARENESS

It’s been six years of capturing babies  and my soul wanted to do more to help kids in some way. I came across the concept of Breast milk donation through a mommy-friend and have since been pursuing the effort  to help Raise awareness on donating excess Breast milk to save babies in the NICU using photography as a medium.

A personal project that started in 2018 is now one that I’ve taken nationally to help moms be aware and contribute if they wish to, to help preemie babies.

Holding your baby for the 1st time in your hands gives a mother such feeling incomparable to anything else. Mother’s milk is the complete nutrition and protective shield for the baby from various diseases. There are times when the little fledgling of a baby may be deprived of this elixir. Either the baby is born prematurely with not enough strength or the mother might be so weak that she may not be able to feed her baby, or there might be other medical conditions for the inability to provide immediate breastfeeding to the baby. Such situations may compromise the baby’s health and immunity. Combating such circumstances requires an interim alternate supply of milk for the babies.

When you breastfeed your baby, it helps strengthen the bond between the two of you. All new mothers want to nurse their baby, but unfortunately, some mothers don’t get the opportunity to breastfeed their babies.

Because most times, the premature baby’s mother cannot feed for various reasons. Furthermore, premature babies are susceptible to Gastrointestinal disease “Necrotizing enterocolitis” and also sepsis. BUT studies have shown that 80% of the problems in the NICU can be prevented by feeding these babies Breast Milk rather than formula. And here’s where YOU CAN HELP, as a mom, you can donate spare or excess supply of breast milk to a *MILK BANK*.

All of us know 'Breast milk is precious'. It is considered 'Drops of Gold' for a baby. And just 1 ounce of milk donated to a *Milk Bank* by a breastfeeding mother who has spare or excess supply will contribute as a valued, pure and a selfless act that a mother can perform to help babies in the NICU.

Who Can Donate Milk?

A healthy lactating mother who tests negative for HIV and VDRL, is not under any drugs and is free from any evidence of Hepatitis, can donate breast milk after due examination and approval by a doctor.
